Active athlete as a coach?

From the coach’s experience, it’s a bit “off the beaten track”. If there’s a chance that a coach will meet people at a race who use his knowledge, services… the whole competition becomes pointless. How and why compete with someone to whom you sold or gave away knowledge on how to compete with others? 🙂 or how to beat a coach?
Coaches are usually former competitors. Then it makes sense.
